LED General Characteristics 01

The nature of light

Visible light (commonly referred to simply as light) is an electromagnetic radiation that the human eye can percieve. Visible light wavelenght is about 380 to 780 nanometers. As opposite to other lighting systems, LEDs can cover the whole range of visible light wavelenght, enabling any colour.

The colour temperature of a light source is the temperature of an ideal black-body radiator that radiates light of comparable hue to that of the light source. Colour temperatures over 5,000K are called cold colours (bluish white), while lower colour temperatures (2,700 - 3,000K) are called warm colours (yellowish white to reddish).

CRI is a quantitative measure of the ability of a light source to reveal the colours of various objects faithfully in comparsion to and ideal natural light source. Light sources with a high CRI are desirable in a colour-critical application, such as photography and cinematography.

Luminous Efficacy

Luminous flux is the measure of the perceived power of light. It differs from radiant flux, the measure of the total power of the electromagnetic radiation.

Luminous intentsity is a measure of the wavelength-weighted power emitted by a light source in a particular direction per unit solid angle, based on the luminosity function, a standarised model of the sensitivity of the human eye.

Beam Angle

The Beam Angle is the angle between the two directions opposed to each other over the beam axis for which the luminous intensity is 10% that of the maximum luminous intensity.

IP Potection Class

The IP Code, International Protection Making, IEC standard 60529, sometimes interpreted as Ingress Protection Marking, classifies and rates the degree of protection provided against the instrusion (including body parts such as hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, and water by mechanical casing and electrical enclosures. It is publised by the International Electrotechnical Comission (IEC).

LED General Characteristics 03

Less fragile: Due to a large lifespan of LED, protective materials have to be present to ensure their durability. To obtain stable colour and uniformity; fabrication conditions are extremely important.

LEDs offer visual comfort. They are a directional light source. By optical systems, the area affected by the beam can be modified to either have more focused or multidirectional and more efficient light.

Excess heat produces reduced luminosity, lifespan and colour shifts. Besides, its efficiency is much higher in cooler systems. Thus, it is essential to have a good heat dissipator system.

The electric circuit is responsible of the light output, lifespan and colour control.
